The grounds of the Brunswick Velodrome were filled with excitement as people of different ages explored the world of electric bikes. That’s exactly what the April 2024 E-Bike Expo was all about. Organized by Bicycle Network, the Expo served as a vibrant place for the growing electric bike movement in Melbourne and its potential to re-design transportation. Well, that is what most of us hope!
It was a chance for many locals to learn how e-bicycles could transform the way we get from A to B, helping our air to be cleaner and seeing its benefits while having lots of fun.
When I walked in, I saw a few different e-bike manufacturers showing off their latest models, from mountain biking to cruising around town and even one designed for two people. Also, I was amazed to see how this mode of transportation has become something for everyone, regardless of age.
The best part? Everyone got a taste of the e-bike experience; no questions asked, go and have a ride!
The Brunswick Velodrome was the perfect place to do a few laps and test-ride all the potential different e-bikes offered to people. And let me tell you, the smiles on their faces said it all—they were having a blast!
Beyond the fun of test rides, the Expo also served a larger purpose: to promote the adoption of e-bikes as a means of reducing carbon emissions. The Merri Bek Mayor and other local key players in politics were present, emphasizing their support for initiatives that encourage sustainable transportation alternatives.
By promoting e-bikes as a practical and eco-friendly transport, the Expo underscored the importance of collective action in building a greener, more sustainable city.
This electric bike Expo wasn’t just about showing off cool bikes – it was also about showing how electric bikes can change the way we think about transportation.
I hope local governments are able to support more Expos in the near future and, most importantly, open the possibility of offering grants for people to buy their first electric bike.
