The Bosch Purion 200 display is part of the new Purion line generation. For the past few years, the standard Purion controller has been the go-to option for some low-priced e-bikes. With the new Bosch Smart System appearance, the Purion line also underwent an update.

Currently, Bosch is offering the Purion line in 200 and 400 models. This guide covers the operation of the 200 display version.

    Purion 200 Specs (basic)

    •  It fits 22.2mm handlebars
    • 1.6-inch color screen display
    • The controller is incorporated with the same display device
    • Designed for electric bikes using Bosch Smart Systems
    • Allows for customisation of pedal assist (PAS) output power through the Bosch Flow App
    • The display brightness self-adjusts according to the ambient light
    • Four out of seven PAS levels are available for selection.

For more information about its other benefits, please visit the manufacturer’s website and download the Bosch Purion 200 user’s manual.

How to Activate the Walk-Assist Mode?

At first glance, it appears simple; however, I initially found myself unable to activate the walk-assist mode.  This is how it is done:

    • Press and hold the walk-assist mode button for 1 second
    • Start walking while pressing the button down. This will tell the system and motor to activate.
    • The motor will provide a speed of 4 km/h, which is low. If you need to reduce the speed further, you can request it directly from the bike store, as the system does not allow you to do it yourself.
    • To stop the assistance, release the button.
    • After 10 seconds of no operation, the system will deactivate

This mode should be used when required to go uphill, on a ramp, or in some cases, upstairs. Do not operate if the rear tire is being inspected.

    The Shift-Down Message Meaning

One of the things I observed about when test riding the Kalkhoff Endeavour L.B Move commuter e-bike was the display showing a message: ‘Shift Down’. This was prompted when riding uphill.

What it says is to drop the gear selection to one that can aid the motor and battery performance, and over time, their lifespan.

    Gear Performance Tip

It is always recommended to stop pedaling for a second before shifting gears. This will reduce the wear on the motor and the groupset.

Customizing the Pedal Assist Levels Torque Output

One of the beauties of the Bosch Smart System technology is the possibility to customise the torque output. This allows the rider to adjust the amount of power the motor provides at each PAS level.

Increasing the output will provide more torque, but not more speed.

Remember: In most countries, the maximum speed for an e-bike is 25 km/hr. If your electric bike’s motor doesn’t cut off at this speed, you could be on the verge of a huge fine.

On the other hand, reducing the output will increase battery performance and possibly extend its range.

Overall, the key element when adjusting the torque output is to determine which one you use more frequently and adjust it based on your needs.

    Final Thoughts

The Bosch Smart system is bringing a new level of comfort to e-bike riders.

The Bosch Purion 200 display is magnificent, providing numerous benefits. If you want simplicity in obtaining all-in-one control of your e-bike, the 200 option is the way to go. If you prefer a minimalist approach, then the 400 alternative could suit your needs.
