While dozens of folding electric bikes are on the market, the brand Tern has been dedicated to building reliable and advanced folding e-bikes for commuting purposes.

The Tern Vektron S10 is a foldable electric bike that has taken the category to the next level. Many changes have occurred since the first model was launched, the biggest being the tech used.

It’s great that the structure was designed to install a rear carry rack. Furthermore, a front basket is possible, but I see it would compromise the folding feature.

My Experience Riding the Tern S10

There are countless reasons why I think the S10 is a high-quality folding electric bicycle.

    Tern Vektron S10 folded

    Ride Quality

    – It is relatively heavy at 22 kg. Compared to the other foldable models I have tested with similar capabilities, this one was 3 kg heavier.

    – I felt the frame and structure were sturdy. This gave me a better sense of safety.

    – The Schwalbe 20″ tires have an attractive rolling efficiency—it may be as good as the Gocycle GS, which is one of the best. However, I would’ve liked to test their traction in wet conditions.

    – The 10-speed Shimano Deore shifter was very smooth and calibrated. I was not overly surprised, as it has been the same in other e-bikes.

    – I was pleased to see the Magura MT4 hydraulic brakes considered for the S10. Not many big brands use this system because there are so many other good ones, but it has not impacted the price much.

    – The folding process was more simple than I thought. The brand claims it can be folded in 10 seconds; however, it took me a bit more than that to fold. It is not the fastest, but it is straightforward.

    – I loved how easy it was to transport it when folded. I wrapped the seatpost and rolled it on its rear tire.

    – The balance was great. The battery positioned on a lower level provided much better stability on the corners, even though I simultaneously experienced some strange gravitational pull.

    Electronics: battery, motor and controller

    – I keep saying that the Bosch is excellent. The 65 Nm of torque was enough to haul the bike and me.

    – While the battery isn’t designed for long-range hauls, the motor felt smooth and faultless during the ride, which felt casual and easygoing.

    – The version I tested had a 500Wh battery, which gives around 100 km (even though the brand claims a bit more). The lowest available battery is 400Wh, which still would provide a good range (around 80 km).

    – Knowing that Bosch has a new Smart System, I would hope to see it in action in the Tern S10. I suppose the brand wanted to keep the price as low as possible.

    Manuverability, Comfort & Safety

    – It handled relatively well and responded snappily to my adjustments and steering directions.

    – In terms of comfort, it allowed plenty of space to sit, making it easy to find an optimal position to ride it.

    – Controlling it was easy since the handlebar was short enough for tight turns.

    – The brakes responded quickly and smoothly with a finger’s worth of pressure; there was no need to squeeze tightly to get it to stop fast.

Who is the Vektron S10 for?

    – I believe anyone can enjoy the Vektron S10. However, I also think it would be more suitable for hauling the family or other large, heavy items.

    – With a powerful, long-range motor and an innovative folding design, I felt it unites a smooth ride with seamless transportability.

    – The folding process was easy, so anyone with no back pain could fold it without issues. It might take some time at the start, but eventually, the process guides itself.

    – I would’ve liked a lighter e-bike. Its overall weight of 22 kg can be bothersome for many.

Overall, I was pleased to test-ride the Tern Vektron S10 Gen 3. It simply provided joy and enough comfort along the streets.
